The 7 Basic Pieces for Furnishing Living Rooms

With the vast array of Scandinavian living room furniture available, even the selection of a new chair can be a confusing and time consuming endeavor. There are seven basic types of living room furniture from which to choose, and the styles and selections within those categories are extensive.

Sofa

Individuals can choose from sofas, loveseats, pullout sofas, sectionals, chaises, futons, and settees. They all provide comfortable seating, and futons and pullout sofas have the added advantage of creating sleeping space for guests when needed. Just be sure there’s enough room to unfold it if need be.

Accent chairs

Accent chairs encompass styles ranging from traditional arm chairs, rocking chairs, recliners, and the chair-and-a-half for limited spaces. An accent chair is traditionally a different style than the rest of the furniture and shouldn’t be too large or dominate the space.

Tables

A scandinavian table performs a number of functions, whether it’s a coffee table in front of a sofa or an accent table to hold flowers. Consumers can choose from multiple styles, many of which can do double duty, that include coffee tables, side chair tables, accent tables, and entertainment tables to hold a TV. They can be plain or incorporate shelves and drawers for storage.

Accent cabinet

Accent cabinets are decorative, functional and have been an essential staple in homes for centuries. Depending upon the style, they provide much needed storage space or can be designed for a specific function, such as holding cherished keepsakes, knick-knacks or souvenirs. The category also includes credenzas and some types of entertainment center styles that can provide a stable surface for TVs along with storage space.

Bookcase

A bookcase is a straightforward piece of furniture to hold books, photo albums and even research notebooks. Many individuals are also repurposing them to contain small houseplants and as unique curio cabinets.

Bench

A bench serves many functions, depending upon the style. They provide a place to sit and some are designed with lift tops for storing small items. They can also act as an accent piece.

Ottoman

Today’s ottoman is typically a multifunctional piece that can be used to rest the feet or sit on as the mood strikes. Many of today’s ottomans are also designed with a lift up top for extra storage.

It doesn’t matter what style, color, fabric or solid wood and timber furniture that an individual prefers, there’s living room furniture to accommodate every taste. Furnishings are available for every design style and offered in a variety of price points for every budget.
